Top things to NOT do during a board interview

BY SHEILA RONNING, FOUNDER & CEO OF WOMEN IN THE BOARDROOM

1. Dress in something that doesn't make you feel powerful, professional and comfortable at the same time.

2. Arrive late or appear that you had to rush to get there on time.

3. Arrive without knowing if the interview is in a group setting, one-on-one, over a meal or in a conference room. (Having an idea of the environment will help you prepare.)

4. Show up unprepared or without well-developed knowledge of the company or the board.

5. Display your nervous tendencies. (Have the toe tapping in check and make sure your posture portrays confidence.)

6. Have your phone on. (Not even on vibrate.)

7. Make poor eye contact.

8. Forget to smile and show your personality.

9. Forget copies of your board bio, board resume or business cards.

10. Talk too much or interrupt. (Listening is sometimes more important.)

11. Provide lengthy, long-winded answers. (Be crisp, concise and thoughtful.)

12. Fail to ask questions. (The board needs to suit you as much as you need to suit the board. For a thorough list of questions to ask in a board interview, watch our Past Virtual Event "Ten Essential Questions to Always ask in a Board Interview".)

How you can have both...
PERSONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND COMPANY DEVELOPMENT

Personal professional development and company development go hand in hand. Better-trained, more knowledgeable employees not only improve their individual skill set, but bring those skills to improve the company.

Some companies struggle to appreciate professional development for fear that improved skill set will make the employee more marketable and increase the risk of departure for a better opportunity. Other companies may think personal professional development isn't "real work" because it takes away from normal duties employees should be fulfilling. READ MORE ABOUT DEVELOPING EMPLOYEES HERE...

SCARLETT FOSTER, VIP MEMBER & VIRTUAL EVENT SPEAKER

As a VIP Member, you have attended many of our events.  With the Twin Cities Signature Event coming up Dec. 5th, what was the most valuable takeaway for you at past Signature Events?   The most valuable aspect of the Signature Events for me is to gain insight into the varied paths women have taken to become corporate board members.  I can brainstorm with others and then do a different and deeper dive into my networking prospects.

You have been the speaker at a previous Virtual Event with us called "The Board & The Street". Why is this an important webinar recording for board-bound women to view?  You only have to open the Wall Street Journal each day to see the rise in investor activism and the way it has morphed in the last five years. You can't be a serious board candidate without grasping the intensity of this trend and I tried to give a peek into this world in the webinar.
